Birth Announcement
Our sow, Maya, gave birth to 9 piglets last night, unaided on pasture. She's such a good homestead hog—I really couldn't ask for more. There are a couple of small ones, but all were up and walking around this morning and look to be strong and vigorous. Big Boy, our boar, is in with them and seems to be handling it all in stride, keeping an eye on everything but not being aggressive toward the piglets or aggressive toward us.

Congratulations Maya! What a good girl, making all that bacon for you. Pig-ranching is on our list of wanna-dos so one day I am definitely going to pick your brain, especially on your fencing. Yay.

We went to the county fair last week and made a point to see all the cows, pigs, goats and sheep. My 2d girl was scared to go into the holding area where the pigs were because of all the snorting they do, so I had to carry her, but we fell in love with some of those pigs! Congrats to Maya!
How do you choose which piglet to butcher later on, when they are all so cute?

They are cute as ever! I would like to do that in the future. We have 2 piglets now but they will be heading to the freezer hopefully before January.

Great News! 9...marvelous bounty. I was wondering what breed they are. Please update us on their care and harvesting. I don't know much about raising pigs but would love to hear about it.

We lost the runt, but that will happen. So far, so good, but we had rain last night, so we'll see how they fared with morning chores.
Jenny, choosing isn't hard because they will all be food, unless we sell some to others as breeding stock.
Annette, not really a juxtaposition, just life on a farm.
We probably won't feed any of these out, as we should have enough meat/ large cuts from the first litter. We'll butcher these small before they take a toll on the pastures or our pocket book. The pigs are eating us out of house and home, and with the prices of organic feed, we can't afford to feed out two rounds of piglets.
Besides, piglet is incredibly moist, tasty, and tender. It's like veal but without the cruelty.
Maybe "juxtaposition" wasn't the best word choice. I didn't mean to lend a negative connotation.
I had a silly reaction. Like at a movie when you, in the audience, know something the lead doesn't. Or like right before cartoon turkeys find out what Thanksgiving Day means for them.

Nice pigs, good job Maya (and to you and Jim) My brother raised Tamworths and he always thought they were the easiest and smartest pigs to raise.
I'm going to be glad when our pigs are gone this year - not living in a grain growing area is making the price of feed horrendous. I don't think we could make pigs pay here even if I was milking more than one cow.
